Appris Supports PPG in Acquiring Skilled Apprentices

Appris & PPG

Specialising in the delivery of Engineering Manufacture Apprenticeships, Appris is supporting fellow Made in Yorkshire member PPG to acquire top skilled apprentices. Taking a holistic approach, the training provider is also helping the company to upskill their workforce and find suitable candidates for roles available at PPG.

Appris and PPG - global leader in paints, coatings and materials, connected at a Backing Britain event in February 2020 hosted by Appris and Made in Yorkshire. As a result, the two organisations are working together to find suitable candidates for apprenticeships at PPG. The firm has taken on a young apprentice from the local area as of September 2020, who will carry out a four-year Mechatronics Maintenance Technician apprenticeship with them.

“Appris tests, screens and interviews potential apprenticeship candidates for recruiting employers based on the skills and attributes they are looking for.” Explained Dean Coleman-Walker, Business Development Director at Appris.

Claire Roberts, Regional Engineering and Maintenance Manager at PPG said:

“Many businesses are finding it difficult to recruit skilled engineers and keep them on, in our experience many are in their 50’s and will be looking to retire soon. Taking on young apprentices adds great value as they are likely to stay on at the business. The partnership with Appris has already made a fantastic difference and we plan to continue sourcing apprentices from them in the future.”

Alongside helping the firm source more skilled apprentices in 2021 and beyond, Appris will also be supporting them in other related aspects of the business. This includes assessing potential employees who apply for roles at PPG. Ensuring applicants have the correct skills for the job, Appris will put them through a robust assessment that encapsulates what the job is about.

Dean continued: “We help mitigate the risk factor when interviewing candidates, making sure they have the skills required for the role. This is more cost and time saving for the employer.”

On top of this, Appris is helping PPG upskill their current machine operating workforce, freeing up time for their skilled engineering team to concentrate on the big projects.

“We are also offering the company’s skilled operators training in basic maintenance to ensure machinery is serviceable and runs efficiently and safely,” Dean concluded.
